How Many Types of Doodles Are There?
Updated:

Doodles seem like they are taking over. They are everywhere! So the question may come up, how many types of doodles are there? Well as it turns out that question is not that easy to answer. We will attempt to solve the question here. 🏫

What is a Doodle, Really?

The first part of this doodle equation to look at is. What is a doodle? A doodle is a purebred dog that is bred with a Poodle 🐩 to create a hybrid dog called a doodle.

So if Purebred dog + Poodle = Doodle

How many purebred dogs are there that could be bred with a Poodle?

Oh the Possibilities….

The best way to answer this question is to take a look at how many purebred dogs are out there. Purebred dogs are registered and categorized by the American Kennel Club which was created in 1884. The AKC is the largest documented registry for purebred dogs in the world. As of right now there are 200 breeds that the AKC recognizes.

There are over 400 breeds internationally that are listed with other registry organizations in other countries. The AKC does not officially recognize these other breeds because there is either not enough interest in that breed or there are not enough dogs in a specific breed. 😞 So what this boils down to is 200 dog purebred dog breeds that could be bred with the Poodle to create the doodle. Right….? Well, Kind of. If we are only counting F1 doodles.

What Does All Of This F1 vs F2 mean, anyway?

  • Purebred Dog + Poodle = F1

The F stands for Filial. But pretty much it just means first generation or initial cross. In this combination you end up with a 50% Poodle and 50% other purebred dog that was used in the breeding. With an F1 cross you end up with a fairly even split of character and appearance traits. (There is no guarantee of this)

  • F1 Doodle + F1 Doodle = F2

All this means is that 2 doodles were  used in the creation of the new doodle. Meaning that the puppy is a second generation doodle. Which still equals out to 50% split of both of the breeds used in the doodles. So you still have 50% Poodle and 50% whichever purebred was used in the doodle creation. This still leads to a pretty even split of personality and physical traits of both breeds used.

If you happened to see F3 or multi-generational it just means a further continuation on of the same breeding pattern after F2

If you see any doodle that has a “b” in its generation description it means that it is what is called a back cross. So as an example if you had our first equation:

Purebred Dog + Poodle = F1

The F1 that was created would then be bred back to a Poodle. This breed back or back cross is usually done with a Poodle in an attempt to make the new doodle shed less. So in our example the new doodle puppy would be 75% Poodle and 25% other pure breed that was originally used.

So if we start to look at these F1, F2 and multi-generational doodle quantities it can get overwhelming. So I think the easy answer would be 200 possible AKC approved purebred doodle possibilities, that being only F1s. If you wanted to answer the question more than that with the F2s and multi-generational doodles then I think the number would be countless…. 🤷

Sizing it all up

Doodles can come in many different sizes. Doodles can range from under 10 pounds to close to 100 pounds. The different size variation comes from 2 different sources. The first has to do with the size of the purebred dog being bred with a Poodle. That other purebred dog could be the smallest being the Chihuahua, creating the Chipoo. Or it could be one of the biggest purebred dog breeds like the St Bernard bred with a Poodle. The other side of this doodle equation has to do with the Poodle. Poodles come in 3 different sizes. The Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodle. The size of the Poodle that is chosen to create the doodle also has a factor in overall size. 🐕

Are they really Hypoallergenic?

Let’s quickly go over the “hypoallergenic” topic. The AKC asserts that “there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog”. Unfortunately people with dog allergies are usually allergic to the dog dander 🦠, not the dog’s fur. Granted the dog fur can be a carrier for the dog dander it is not the cause of the allergen. The old school of thought was that less dog hair = less allergen. So breeders would attempt to have as many Poodle genes in a dog breed to lessen dog hair shed. Unfortunately, this does not change the level of dander. Please be cautious regarding the labels of “hypoallergenic” if you have dog allergies. So now you want a doodle….

If you are thinking about getting a doodle you must make sure that you are  in love with any combination of traits that a doodle surprise could offer. 🎁 Your doodle may look exactly like your chosen purebred mix  but act exactly like a Poodle. Would you be ok with that? What about the other way around? If you can love 💗 ALL of the traits of both parent breeds then DO IT! Doodles are the best!

I would check at Poodle rescues and also at chosen purebred mix specific rescues, they may have a mixed breed/hybrid there as well. Also check regular rescues. Just realize that if you want to rescue you may have to wait to find your dog or travel to pick it up. But there are great benefits to rescuing instead of buying. 👍👏

If you decide to buy a puppy please do your research on the breeder and don’t be afraid to ask the right questions. And good luck to you! I hope you find your forever puppy! 🥰

Hello there! My name is Rochelle and I’m one of those doodle moms who doesn’t have kids but probably gives more care to my doodle than some people do to their own children, spoiled would probably be an understatement. ;) After becoming more active online with other doodle owners I realized that thousands of doodle owners are facing all sorts of issues with their dogs. I knew with my education and training history I could make a positive impact.
